Bluetooth Headsets and Teams: Why Call Quality Drops and What to Do

Your headphones sound rich while you listen to music, then the moment a Teams call connects everything turns thin and tinny, like a phone line from decades ago. Nothing is broken. The headset has switched to a different Bluetooth mode, one that trades sound quality for the ability to use the microphone. Once you understand that switch, most of the other oddities of Bluetooth on calls make sense, and the workarounds become obvious.

Two modes, and only one of them has a microphone

Classic Bluetooth audio runs in profiles. The profile used for music sends high-quality stereo sound in one direction only, from the computer to your ears. It has no path for a microphone. The profile used for calls carries audio in both directions at once, but to fit two streams into the same narrow radio link it cuts the audio bandwidth sharply. Voices remain intelligible, but everything else suffers.

When Teams opens your headset microphone, the headset has to move to the call profile, and your listening quality falls with it. This is why the drop happens at the exact moment a call starts, and why it recovers a few seconds after you hang up. Other reasons Bluetooth struggles on calls

The profile switch explains the tinny sound. It does not explain stuttering, robotic voices or dropouts, which usually come from the radio link itself.

Bluetooth shares the 2.4 GHz band with many wireless networks, wireless mice and keyboards, and plenty of household gadgets. A laptop talking to a router on that band while also streaming a call to a headset is asking one small antenna to do a lot. Multipoint is another frequent culprit. Fixes, from easiest to most effective

Split the job between two devices

If you love your consumer headphones for listening, you can keep them in the high-quality mode by never asking them to be a microphone.
